In a major victory for environmental protection efforts, the Nigerian Army has successfully apprehended a group of illegal miners in Taraba State, recovering a significant cache of suspected precious stones. The arrest, which took place at the Garba Chede checkpoint in Bali Local Government Area, is a testament to the vigilance of soldiers from the 6 Brigade, who uncovered the illicit mining operation on December 17.
Captain Olubodunde Oni, Acting Assistant Director of the 6 Brigade Army Public Relations, confirmed the arrest, explaining that the operation was triggered by the seizure of a suspicious vehicle with a foreign registration number, B 0515 VV. Upon inspection, troops found the vehicle concealing unlawfully mined stones hidden in sacks lined with dry grasses, a clever attempt to evade detection. The truck’s driver, Abubakar Suleiman, and eight other passengers were arrested on the spot.
In line with standard procedures, the suspects were promptly handed over to the Taraba State Special Taskforce Committee on Environmental Protection, Public Safety, and Prohibition of Deforestation for further investigation and prosecution. Brigadier General Kingsley Chidiebere Uwa, Commander of the 6 Brigade Nigerian Army, expressed gratitude for the support of the Taraba community and reassured the public that the Brigade would continue its efforts to assist civil authorities in enforcing environmental laws.
As illegal mining continues to pose a threat to both the environment and local security, the Nigerian Army’s swift action sends a strong message about the importance of protecting natural resources. Brigadier General Uwa called on citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities, emphasizing the collective responsibility to maintain a safer and more sustainable environment in Taraba and beyond.
