IPOB suspends Nnamdi Kanu as leader
The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has announced the indefinite suspension of the Office of the Leader and the position of Director of Radio Biafra, both offices previously occupied by Nnamdi Kanu.
The decision was made public in a statement released on Thursday, June 18, by the Head of the Directorate of State (DOS), Mazi Chikadibia Edoziem, who said the action was taken to preserve the movement’s security, stability, and long-term objectives.
According to the statement, the suspension takes immediate effect and will remain in place until further review by the Directorate.
Edoziem explained that the move was intended to protect IPOB members and supporters across the world, especially those in the South-East region, while reducing potential security risks that could affect the organisation’s activities.
The statement noted that the leadership of IPOB considered the decision necessary after reviewing developments believed to pose operational and security concerns.
It stated that the Directorate of State carries the responsibility of protecting IPOB’s mission and ensuring the safety of members globally, particularly those in Biafraland.
As part of the decision, IPOB stressed that no individual or group should claim legitimacy or authority through the now-suspended Office of the Leader to conduct activities in the organisation’s name.
The group declared that any action, criminal conduct, or operation carried out under the suspended office would not represent IPOB and should be attributed solely to the individuals involved.
According to the statement, the suspension aims to prevent unauthorised groups from exploiting the existence of the leadership office to carry out activities that conflict with IPOB’s objectives and official mission.
The Directorate further stated that IPOB would not accept responsibility for actions taken by persons who do not currently occupy recognised positions within the movement or who lack approval from the DOS.
The announcement followed a full meeting of the Directorate of State held on June 17, 2026, during which members reportedly concluded that maintaining the suspension served the broader interests of Biafrans.
IPOB also used the opportunity to emphasise that the organisation was founded and sustained by Biafrans in the diaspora and should not be viewed as the personal creation of any individual.
The group rejected any claims suggesting that the Directorate of State had been dissolved, describing such declarations as legally invalid and ineffective.
According to the statement, any attempt to dissolve the Directorate should be regarded as “ab initio null and void,” and members as well as the public were advised to disregard such announcements.
Explaining the reasons behind the decision, the DOS referred to intelligence reports and concerns linked to communications allegedly associated with arrests and deaths involving some members.
The statement claimed that internal reviews considered reports concerning meetings involving security agencies and communications connected to Kanu’s detention.
IPOB also expressed concern over what it described as plans by certain individuals to establish a new militia structure capable of triggering renewed violence in the South-East.
The Directorate argued that such developments could undermine the movement’s structure and create conditions for instability.
Despite the developments, IPOB reiterated that its campaign for self-determination remains peaceful and non-violent.
The statement emphasised that the movement’s objectives should never become a reason for causing hardship, violence, injury, or loss of life among the people it claims to represent.
IPOB concluded by stating that the suspension of the Office of the Leader would remain in effect until another review is conducted and further decisions are communicated through official channels.
