Police operatives in Imo State have arrested a suspected child trafficker, Onyinyechi Emeka, a 40-year-old woman intercepted during a stop-and-search operation in Okigwe. The arrest, which took place on February 7, led to the rescue of a five-year-old boy who had been reported missing in Abia State. The police spokesperson, Henry Okoye, confirmed the development, revealing that the suspect was traveling to Ebonyi with the child when she was stopped by officers.
Initially, the suspect claimed the boy was her sister’s son, but inconsistencies in her statements quickly raised suspicions. The officers, sensing something was amiss, pressed further, leading to the discovery of the child’s real identity. In a remarkable display of awareness, the boy was able to provide his father’s phone number, which allowed police to confirm that he had been declared missing by his family.
Further investigations revealed that the suspect had been working with a trafficking syndicate and had received ₦30,000 to deliver the child to an undisclosed buyer in Ebonyi.
