New Orleans rap veteran Mystikal has been sentenced to 20 years in prison following a criminal case connected to a 2022 assault at his home in Prairieville, Louisiana.
The rapper, whose real name is Michael Lawrence Tyler, appeared before a court in Ascension Parish for sentencing after previously entering a guilty plea in March to a charge of third-degree rape.
The sentence marks another major legal development in the career of the veteran hip-hop artist, who became widely known during the late 1990s and early 2000s for hit records that helped shape Southern rap.
Under the plea agreement accepted by the court, Tyler’s prison sentence was capped at 20 years, reducing his potential exposure compared with the maximum punishment available for the charge.
Court records indicate the agreement also resulted in the dismissal of multiple additional charges originally filed in connection with the case.
Among the counts reportedly removed through the agreement were first-degree rape, robbery, domestic abuse battery by strangulation, and false imprisonment.
According to testimony presented in court and media reports, the incident originated in July 2022 when the complainant, described as a business associate, visited Tyler’s residence to discuss financial matters.
The woman alleged that the meeting escalated into violence.
Court accounts stated that she accused Tyler of physically assaulting her, causing injuries and restricting her movement during the encounter.
Investigators later reported observing visible injuries when they interviewed her following medical treatment.
During sentencing proceedings, the court heard statements describing the emotional and physical impact of the incident.
According to reports, Tyler addressed the courtroom and acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations while speaking during the hearing.
Days before sentencing, Tyler reportedly attempted to withdraw his guilty plea.
Court filings indicated he argued that emotional distress affected his judgment and that he had insufficient time to fully consider the consequences of the agreement.
The judge denied the request and proceeded with sentencing.
Tyler has remained in custody without bond since his arrest and will receive credit for time already served.
The court also ordered that legal registration requirements connected to prior convictions remain in place following his eventual release.
This case represents the second major sex-crime-related conviction involving the rapper.
Earlier in his career, Mystikal served prison time after a separate criminal case that resulted in a conviction connected to battery and extortion allegations.
